Nintendo 3DS does away with Opera Internet Browser for NetFront

According to Nikkei, a Japanese newspaper, news has dropped that Nintendo will not be using Opera as their internet browser with the 3DS. Instead it has chosen to use NetFront. Below is a quote concerning this issue from Nikkei:

"ACCESS, an embedded software developer, will be providing the new web browser for the Nintendo 3DS, a portable game console launched by Nintendo in Japan on the 26th of February. Nintendo expects to provide the new internet functionality in May, through the distribution of a software update. The 3DS will be available for sale in the United States and Europe in March.

ACCESS will be providing their NetFront browser, which has been adopted by more than a billion devices, including mobile phones and TV's."

And the 3DS Game that sold the most during launch was...

Professor Layton And The Mask Of Miracle at 117,589 copies over the weekend. That is an incredible feat considering it had some very tough competition in Nintendogs + cats and Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition.

Nintendo 3DS Hacked Already, Running Nintendo DS games

It sucks that this is already happening, but only for Nintendo DS games right now. pirated 3DS games don't seem to be up and running on the 3DS, yet. I'm sure that will be on its way in no time, looks like Nintendo didn't solve their piracy problem.

Potential Announcement set for Nintendo's Keynote Speech at GDC on Wednesday

“This year we have keynotes from companies like Nintendo, who are in a position to announce things if they wish to.” - GDC global brand director Simon Carless
This quote may not mean anything at all, but if the past is any indication then it is certainly possible for Nintendo to announce something new. Keep your eyes posted here on Wednesday, if an announcement is made, I'll have it right here waiting for you.

Nintendo 3DS Sold Out in Japan but New Shipments Should Arrive Soon

Well it looks as though 400,000 units of the Nintendo 3DS handheld sold out in Japan on launch day. Lineups were approaching the 1000's and some stores only offered pre-order sales. Stores that did offer same day sales sold out in a matter of hours. If this is any indication of what will happen in other locations then its best to pre-order to ensure you get a 3DS at launch.

To those of you who don't get a 3DS unit on launch day, Nintendo seems to be sending out a second shipment within a matter of days. Stores that sold out in Japan notified customers that they can place a pre-order for the second shipment which would arrive on Sunday morning. This gives hope to those of us anxious to get their hands on the 3DS assuming that Nintendo has a similar strategy for other countries.

North America and UK residents may want to place a pre-order to ensure they get a pre-order on day 1. Well, I have listed links below to give you a few places to check.

Nintendo 3DS Review Scores from Japanese Magazine Famitsu

Super Street Fighter IV (9/8/8/9, 34 points):
"The way you can use the touch screen to launch even charge moves in an instant is actually kind of revolutionary for the series, a change that I think could lead to some neat new tactics. Despite that, the controls can still be very difficult at times, even with the ability to redefine buttons. Whether you're able to overlook that will define your overall the opinion of the game."

Dynasty Warriors 3DS (9/9/8/8, 34 points):
"Nothing has changed much in the DW formula, but switching between characters while shouting out orders to your side gives this game a new sort of real-time strategy feel. Going 3D makes it easier to gauge positioning between yourself and enemies, which makes the game easier overall."

Nintendogs + Cats (10/9/9/10, 38 points):
"The sheer fuzziness factor on all the pets is too cute. Watching them totter around in 3D is so calming, and the act of petting them has much more of a you-are-there feel to it. Keeping a dog and cat together gives you a huge number of must-see moments, and the ability to interact quickly and easily with other pet owners is great."

Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle (8/8/8/8, 32 points):
"The simple interface and screen setup is similar to the rest of the series and put together very well. The animated parts are in 3D and there are a variety of new features and game gimmicks, but the play style hasn't changed much. It's a natural progression for the series, 3D support included."

Super Monkey Ball 3DS (9/8/8/7, 32 points):
"Having three different games to enjoy is great, although the Monkey Fight and Race bits are rehashes of other titles and not all that exciting. The core Monkey Ball game, though, uses 3D in a variety of gimmicks and traps to make the whole experience a lot more impactful and exciting. It's simple to learn and highly addictive."

Ridge Racer 3D (8/8/7/9, 32 points):
"The courses are full of floaty jumps and other gimmicks to get you inside the game more. Racing across them is pretty fun, and the drifting (which tends to throw off beginners in other games) is simple to pull off. The rival cars you race in Grand Prix mode and so on are pretty tough, though, and I wonder if the game's still too hard overall. A difficulty selection would have been nice."

Play Nintendo: Okamiden Preview

Still holds the charm that made Okami a special game.
After playing through the short, yet satisfying Okamiden demo, I can now say this is definitely one game that every Nintendo DS owner shouldn’t be without. For starters it is, in my opinion, the greatest looking Nintendo DS game to date. The sumi-e art style that made Okami such a beautiful game returns and looks incredible on the Nintendo DS. Okamiden has a third-person perspective, but the camera seems to favor an overview angle. Controlling the camera is easily done with the touch screen. An area map is also displayed on the touch screen. It is important to note that the standard view does change after encountering an enemy. During battle, the view will be more like that of the original Okami.

18 Nintendo 3DS Games Confirmed for North America Launch

NINTENDO REVEALS LAUNCH-DAY LINEUP OF 18 NINTENDO 3DS GAMES

With More Than 30 Games Total Launching by Early June, There's Something for Everyone

REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 22, 2011 – On day one, new Nintendo 3DS™ owners will have plenty of video games to keep them busy. Nintendo and its third-party publishing partners have made sure that people who buy a system on March 27 will be able to choose from a variety of experiences that leverage the system's new features. A steady and diverse stream of games of all kinds will keep the fun going, with more than 30 Nintendo 3DS games total launching before the E3 Expo in early June.

"Seeing 3D visuals without the need for special glasses is just one aspect of Nintendo 3DS," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "The real test of any system is whether the games and applications draw you in and keep you engaged. Through the launch window and beyond, Nintendo 3DS delivers."

On March 27, new Nintendo 3DS owners will be able to choose from the following Nintendo-published games, each available at a suggested retail price of $39.99:
  • Pilotwings Resort™, an aerial adventure featuring airplanes, hang gliders and rocket belts. Players soar above tropical Wuhu Island in 3D as they complete missions or snap pictures.
  • Steel Diver™, a submarine game that involves strategy and combat. The 3D visuals give players the sensation that they are looking into a miniature aquarium as they control the sub's speed, depth and pitch, and fire torpedoes.
  • nintendogs™ + cats, a game that lets players interact with realistic puppies – and kittens – in a variety of fun ways. There are three versions of the software, each with different starting breeds: French bulldog, toy poodle and golden retriever. But in each version players can unlock and enjoy more than 20 different breeds.
Other Nintendo 3DS games in the works for 2011 from Nintendo include The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D, Star Fox 64™ 3D, Kid Icarus™: Uprising and new installments in the Mario Kart™ series.

Third-party publishers also have a strong slate of games ready to go on March 27. These include:
  • Super Street Fighter® IV 3D Edition from CAPCOM
  • The Sims™ 3 from EA
  • Madden NFL Football from EA SPORTS
  • Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D from Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.
  • LEGO® Star Wars® III: The Clone Wars™ from LucasArts™
  • RIDGE RACER® 3D from NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc.
  • Super Monkey Ball™ 3D from SEGA
  • BUST-A-MOVE UNIVERSE™ from Square-Enix, Inc.
  • SAMURAI WARRIORS®: Chronicles from TECMO KOEI AMERICA Corp.
  • Asphalt™ 3D from UBISOFT
  • Combat of Giants™: Dinosaurs 3D from UBISOFT
  • Rayman® 3D from UBISOFT
  • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon® Shadow Wars from UBISOFT
Nintendo 3DS also comes pre-loaded with a variety of fun games, applications and features, such as the Nintendo 3DS camera, which can be used to take photos in 2D and 3D as well as be used in other games and applications. For instance, the built-in Face Raiders™ game asks users to shoot at funny depictions of their own photographed faces, while the Mii Maker™ application lets gamers use the camera to take a picture of a person and have an automatic Mii™ character created. The system also comes with six AR Cards, which, when viewed through the outer cameras, bring to life fun and interesting animations and images. For example, when used with nintendogs + cats, users might see their puppies or kittens sitting on their coffee tables or in the palms of their hands. With Nintendo 3DS Sound, users can enjoy sound-manipulation tools or rock out with their Nintendo 3DS system while listening to their MP3 or AAC music files.

Nintendo 3DS is also able to play nearly every game in the massive Nintendo DS library, except those that require use of a secondary Game Boy™ Advance slot.

IGN Pulls Virtual Console Day 1 and Pokemon Black/White 3DS Enhancement Statements

Thanks to the digging of Nintendo 3DS Blog an interesting tidbit has been found. I reported earlier of the Virtual Console being available on Day 1, earlier reported by IGN, which was contrary to statements made by Nintendo in previous interviews. Well, it seems that IGN has retracted this information from their 3DS guide. This could be because that the information wasn't supposed to be released this early, or that the information was just plain wrong. It's more likely that the information was wrong because this new Virtual Console statement is quite different and more in line with what we previously knew:

"It's important to note that some of these features will not be available out of the box, and will need to be downloaded from a Wi-Fi connection. Nintendo has revealed that a worldwide update, scheduled for late May, will enable some of this functionality, most notably the eShop (including the Virtual Console) and DSi-to-3DS data transfer." - IGN

So much for Super Mario Land on Day 1.

Donkey Kong Hockey Game and Watch Footage

Due to my Canadian patriotism and nerd like tendencies, I just had to find some footage of Donkey Kong Hockey! Hope you enjoy!

25 Years of Sports Games Featuring Mario

To my surprise a Donkey Kong Hockey Game and Watch game actually exists! That's pretty damn cool if you ask me. I wonder if I'm the only one who didn't know about this game. Most of the titles you will recognize, but there may be a few surprises. One of them I ruin here, sorry. Anyways, here's an excerpt form a pretty comprehensive 1-UP article featuring numerous Mario Sports titles over a span of 25 years.

"Though it stars Donkey Kong, this little-known toy is actually Mario's very first appearance as an athlete! This is one of the few Game & Watch games not to be recreated in Nintendo's Game & Watch Collections for the Game Boy, so unfortunately there is no easy way to play this one anymore.

This was the first and last time Mario played hockey until the just-released Mario Sports Mix."

Retro Game Challenge 2 a Romhack Ruse

It was definitely too good to be true. Retro Game Challenge 2 will likely not be coming to NA. Tiny Cartridge revealed that the two cryptic videos were translation hacks. It's pretty dang crappy to find out about this information. Maybe someday it will finally make it stateside.

Nintendo 3DS to feature Virtual Console on Day 1

A while back we learned that we would have to wait for the eStore to open its doors, but in the IGN 3DS Guide it is revealed that the Virtual Console will be open on day one. We will have to wait for the browser, and other eStore features, but we can be playing Super Mario Land and maybe other Gameboy classics out of the box.

"Nintendo has clarified that the Virtual Console will be available immediately upon the launch of the 3DS."

A look at Tetris Link

This looks like a blast! I need to have one of these Tetris games.

Tetris® Makers and Techno Source Introduce New Tabletop Strategy Game: Tetris® Link™

NEW YORK--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--The Tetris® brand is the most recognized casual gaming brand in the world. Today, toy innovator Techno Source and Blue Planet Software, Inc., the company that manages the exclusive licensing rights to the Tetris brand, announced they have partnered to launch Tetris® Link™, a tabletop game with multiple layers of strategic game play for the whole family.
In the Tetris Link game, players battle to score the most points by linking colored Tetriminos, the iconic Tetris playing pieces, into an upright game tower while attempting to block competitors from linking their game pieces. The game will make its debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York City February 13-16, 2011 (booth #3151) and will be available for purchase at mass market and specialty retailers in spring of 2011.

"Mii Battles" revealed to be a StreePass Game

Mii Battles isn't an official title, but it was recently revealed to be a StreetPass game. Mii's can battle it out and level up similar to the Figurine battle system in Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. Which means your Mii caricatures will battle other Miis as you pass them on the street. This is indeed a nice little incentive to carry your 3DS along with you on your daily adventures. StreetPass Quest appears to be a separate from the Mii Battles, but we should know the closer we get to launch.

Activision Rids 2011 of Guitar Hero

It's not a surprise to me personally, seeing how the music genre has declined in recent years. I tried it for a bit, then got out very quickly. Sure, it was a blast for a bit, but for me it got old faster than it did for other gamers. This news comes from a a recent Activision press release. Below you can find a quote on the direction the company is headed for the year 2011.

"Activision Blizzard will continue to invest its capital and resources in the significant opportunities afforded by online gaming worldwide and will reduce its exposure to low-margin and low-potential businesses.  In 2011, the company will allocate the majority of its resources and focus toward opportunities which we expect will afford us the greatest competitive advantages and the greatest potential for best-in-class quality, high-margin digital growth, and long-term success.  These opportunities include Blizzard Entertainment's games currently in development, robust investment in forthcoming Call of Duty titles, the development of a best-in-class digital community surrounding the Call of Duty franchise, a new property from Bungie and an innovative new universe with broad appeal that will be revealed at Toy Fair later this week and will bring the world of toys, video games and the Internet together in an unprecedented way.  These investments should better position Activision Blizzard for long-term growth and enable it to continue expanding its position as the largest digital publisher.

At the same time, due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing's Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011.  The company also will stop development on True Crime: Hong Kong™.  These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world's best interactive entertainment experiences."

Looks like there will be no more guitar hero in the immediate future.

Amazon.co.uk cuts Nintendo 3DS Price

With no price set for the 3DS in the UK, retailers are battling amongst themselves to offer up the best deal. Currently Amazon has cut the pre-order price of the 3DS from £229.99 down to £197.99. That's a savings of £32.99. ShopTo is another UK retailer that is selling the 3DS for a good savings. For £199.85 you can pre-order a 3DS. Pretty decent pre-order offers in the UK!

Is the 3DS more powerful than the Wii? High Voltage Software seems to think it is, in some ways

A recent interview with HVS reveals that the 3DS is more powerful than the Wii in certain situations. I could definitely see this being a possibility, considering the fact that the 3DS will be portraying awesome graphics with 3D capability. The system must be strong enough to handle that aspect. Below is the first quote related to the power of the gaming handheld.

"In some ways, it’s even more powerful than the Wii. The amount of power dedicated to the small screen opens a lot of possibilities, and the shading and texture ability is superior.’ - Matt Corso

High Voltage Software has been known to work around the Wii's lack of graphical power and this next statement proves that some effects may be easier to pull off on the handheld.

"From our internal testing we have been incredibly surprised at what the little system can do. From a strictly visual point-of-view, it is impressive. We are able to pull off many advanced lighting and texture techniques much more easily than on the Wii. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t a cost to doing them, only that they can be done more easily. We do have 3DS kits, we are working on a number of different ideas, and we are definitely excited about what this system means to the industry." - Keith Hladik

With a new Conduit coming to the handheld, one can only wonder what HVS has up their sleeve for the Nintendo 3DS.

Another Cryptic Retro Game Challenge 2 Video

Another cryptic video has popped up online concerning the Game Center CX 2 game. This time featuring a title screen for the North American version which would be known as Retro Game Challenge 2. Again, this is no indication that the video is real, or that the translated version exists, but it is certainly gaining some interest among RGC fans. RGC2 would be a great addition to the Nintendo DS in its final days and a great game for any retro video game fans. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this game and I hope you do as well! I will be following Tiny Cartridge for updates as this story unfolds.

U-Force the Worst NES Controller Ever?

Is the U-Force the worst iteration of a Nintendo Entertainment System controller? Well, Luke over at Kotaku certainly feels that way. I don't have any personal experience with the controller, but I know that from watching the Angry Video Game Nerd it is definitely frustrating.

"Looking like a futuristic version of Battleship (or a GIANT Nintendo DS), the U-Force comprised of two "screens" which used infared to register the movement of a player's hands "over" them. These movements would then, in theory, be turned into in-game actions. For example, if you were playing Punch-Out and wanted to move left, you'd move your hands left and the U-Force would respond.

Or, it would if it worked. Which the U-Force did not. Getting the device to accurately detect a player's movements was something akin to sorcery, the peripheral alternating between detecting a movement and accurately translating it, detecting it and getting the move wrong or just plain not detecting anything at all."

Cryptic GameCenter CX (Retro Game Challenge) Message from Arino Himself

There is no indication that this message means anything, but fans of the Retro Game Challenge DS game would love to see the GameCenter CX 2 game only released in Japan, find its way to North America. I played the original and I personally loved the game. Its mixture of retro style games and 80's atmosphere really was one of the best experiences on the Nintendo DS. The original Retro Game Challenge never sold well, so its only a gamers dream right now that the sequel will be released here. Those of you who love retro games should buy Retro Game Challengr now for only 14 bucks at Amazon.com! Here's to the series!
