New Tetris Game and Professor Layton and the Last Specter

Details for both of these games were hidden in the Skyward Sword press release:
The original portable Tetris® game was a smash hit on the Game Boy system. The new Tetris: Axis game lets players use the magic of the Nintendo 3DS system to jump into the action in 3D without the need for special glasses. The game includes more than 20 different modes – some familiar, some new. Up to eight players can compete in wireless multiplayer battles, even if only one player has a game card**. Tetris: Axis also makes use of the augmented-reality and SpotPass features of Nintendo 3DS. Tetris: Axis is part of a stirring fall lineup for Nintendo 3DS that also includes Pokémon Rumble Blast (launching Oct. 24), Super Mario 3D Land (November) and Mario Kart 7 (December).

Professor Layton and the Last Specter for the Nintendo DS family of systems is the fourth installment in the Professor Layton puzzle adventure series. It begins a new trilogy that is a prequel to the original games, set three years before the events in Professor Layton and the Curious Village. The game contains more puzzles than any in the series to date. As a North American exclusive to the overall Professor Layton and the Last Specter package, a bonus role-playing game called Professor Layton’s London Life containing more than 100 hours of additional content will be available to players from the start of the game.

Star Fox 64 3D Multiplayer Trailer

Eiji Aonuma Talks Zelda Wii U Ideas

Eiji Aonuma recently shared some potential Zelda Wii U ideas with Nintendo Power:
“I really think [having two screens is] one of the most exciting features of the system. Unlike the Nintendo DS, there’s distance between the television and you and your other screen. That really allows for some different interactions, some of which you saw [at E3]. For example, imagine having the contents of Link’s satchel available to you on the screen of your controller, and using elements of the pouch to interact with gameplay on the television.

“With The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, we had the Nunchuck and Wii Remote sort of stand in for the sword and shield that Link carries. But in a game for the Wii U, I can definitely see something like the controller itself becoming the different items that Link is using, allowing you to interact with the game world and with the game items in a very different way.”
I like the idea of using the controller as a way to interact with Link's inventory. I am unsure of the controller becoming items in the game, but that is one thing that has to be seen before understanding completely. Whatever Nintendo chooses to do will likely be innovative and fun, so I'm not going to worry this early in development.

Natsume has delayed both Harvest Moon: Tale of Two Towns and Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove. Natsume has delayed this titles due to poor Nintendo 3DS sales. I would imagine that once new sales numbers reach high levels then these games are a go.

Xenoblade Chronicles Enters UK Top 10 at Number 7

Why is this relevant to North America? Well, Nintendo has previously said that they will be watching the sales of Xenoblade Chronicles in Europe. Using this data they will make a decision on whether or not to bring the game to North America. This may mean that we are one step closer to getting this game on our side of the planet.

Status of Play Nintendo

At the moment I am fixing problems with my computer, therefore updates will be scattered. Expect the biggest stories for today to go up a little later. A Metroid and Metroid II review are also slated for release. Metroid II will likely go up first!

Thanks for sticking it out with us, we know it has been a lackluster weekend and we're working to make up for the lack of posts.

Tekken 3D Prime Edition (Nintendo 3DS) Trailer

Confirmed North America Release Date for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

NINTENDO'S NEW ZELDA GAME SOARS SKYWARD ON NOV. 20

Master the Sword in Link's Newest Motion-Controlled Adventure for Wii

REDMOND, Wash., Aug. 17, 2011 – Nintendo's celebration of the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda™ series continues in full force with the announcement that The Legend of Zelda™: Skyward Sword will launch in North America on Nov. 20. The epic adventure, created from the ground up for the Wii™ console, sends this storied series to new heights and marks a turning point for the franchise.

The game uses the precision motion controls of the Wii Remote™ Plus (or a Wii Remote controller with a Wii MotionPlus™ accessory) and Nunchuk™ controllers to map on-screen action to the player's movements. When a player swings the Wii Remote Plus controller, Link™ appears to swing his sword in exactly the same way.

Different enemies have different battle tactics, so players must analyze their approach and develop counterattacks that play on the enemies' weaknesses. The game's wide array of items also use full motion controls, letting players roll bombs, shoot arrows and guide flying objects like never before.

The game includes a massive, multilayered world that takes players from dark dungeons to a diverse overworld to cloud cities in the sky, requiring a combination of puzzle-solving and swordplay to unlock all of its secrets. Link soars through the air on the wings of a majestic bird while exploring the game's sky area, providing players with unprecedented freedom of movement as they progress on their adventure. The quest lays the foundation for the events in The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™, which is frequently cited as one of the greatest video games of all time.

"The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is the biggest game in the series yet," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "We've just scratched the surface of this massive experience, and we look forward to sharing additional details with fans as we approach the Nov. 20 launch."

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is now available for pre-order at major retailers throughout North America. A deposit may be required for pre-orders. See individual retailers for details. For more information about the game, visit http://www.zelda.com/skywardsword/.

PlayNintendo.ca Crashing

I have been receiving reports from people saying that the domain www.playnintendo.ca has been crashing. I am working on gathering more information at this time and hope to clear this issue up soon. If you've been having issues with the www.playnintendo.ca domain, please send an e-mail to parko_at_playnintendo.ca with the following information:

  • Type of Browser and Version Number
Internet Explorer seems to be the main culprit. All information received will be used to help understand and solve this issue only. Please no personal details as they are not needed.

Blogger handles the hosting (although I'd rather move it to some real hosting space) and the address http://playnintendoparko.blogspot.com is currently working fine. The issue seems to stem from the redirect from the domain registrar to the site content on Blogger.

If you've been having problems, I do apologize. The issue was brought to my attention earlier today and I will work to find a solution over the next few days, until then use this link to access Play Nintendo.

Thank you for your Patience

Nintendo 3DS owners anticipating their 20 free NES and GBA games will be happy to to hear that Nintendo has released some details on how the software will work.

Nintendo will be releasing priority versions of the NES games to customers on September 1st, but they will not contain all the features of the official versions to be released later in the year:

Priority NES Features

  • An electronic manual explaining game controls
  • Alternating multiplayer is supported in some titles, but simultaneous multiplayer is not
  • Restore Point will not be featured, however, VC Suspend (press home button to suspend the action and come back later) will be supported
Official NES Features

  • A Full electronic manual
  • Simultaneous and Versus Multiplayer will be supported with multiple 3DS handhelds
  • Restore Points will be available in the official versions
  • Transfer games to another 3DS handheld will be supported in the official versions
  • Non-3DS gamers can purchase official versions when they are released to the eShop VC, but 3DS Ambassadors can upgrade for free
Nintendo will also be releasing GBA games later in the year for 3DS Ambassadors. However, Nintendo hasn't made any plans for them to be released to other 3DS owners. Here are the software details:

GBA Features
  • Full Electronic Manuals
  • Wireless and other Peripherals not supported
  • Pressing home displays a simple menu, you will not actually be able to return to the Home menu
  • No Restore Point or VC Suspend for the GBA games
  • Saving data will work identical to how it works for each GBA game
  • 3DS will not enter Sleep Mode, even after closing the handheld
  • SpotPass and StreetPass will not function during gameplay
  • Again, you will be able to transfer games to another 3DS handheld when released
The Game Boy Advance games seems to contain a list of things that can't be done, but free software is free I guess. Personally, I would have liked the VC Suspend feature, love that on the Wii VC.

Phase Two of Operation Rainfall Begins!

(08/11/2011) – As Operation Rainfall progresses with Phase Two of its campaign to encourage the localization of Xenoblade, The Last Story, and Pandora’s Tower in all regions, we want to keep our supporters updated with new information and reiterate a few key facts.

Nintendo of Europe, a subsidiary of Nintendo Co., Ltd., has announced that Xenoblade Chronicles will be launching two weeks ahead of schedule, with the new release date set for August 19, 2011. Also, Nintendo of Australia has announced that Xenoblade Chronicles will be released on September 1, 2011 in Oceania. Reginald Fil-Aime, President and COO of Nintendo of America, recently had this to say in regards to the so-called “missing Wii games” in an interview with Richard George of IGN Entertainment:

“We will be watching very closely what happens in Europe," "Certainly if there are business opportunities and positive consumer uptake from some of those titles, that will be great data for us to consider as we look at what to do with these titles.”

As part of Phase Two of Operation Rainfall, we very much want to see Xenoblade Chronicles sell exceptionally well in PAL regions. To all residents in the regions of Europe and Oceania, we encourage you to pre-order and purchase it at your earliest convenience. In the Americas, we encourage you to promote awareness of these titles. Good sales abroad will be a strong indicator for the title making it to American shores.

For those supporting our movement domestically don’t forget to write, stamp, and mail your letter to Nintendo of America this week. We’re hoping to get all those letters in the mail between August 13th and 17th so that they reach NOA at roughly the same time.  Our goal is to have all letters ARRIVE at Nintendo of America offices on or close to August 19. If you prefer, we have a template for mail in letters featured on our website. Be sure to mention your promise to buy Xenoblade, and if relevant, your contribution to Child’s Play on our official website – http://operationrainfall.com

Nintendo of America Watching Xenoblade Chronicles Sales in Europe

IGN's Rich George recently interviewed Reggie Fils-Aime about a variety of topics, including Nintendo of America's intentions to bring Xenoblade Chronicles and Friends to North America. Reggie's answer didn't reveal any release dates for the games, but he did drop a little interesting tidbit.

Reggie has stated that Nintendo of America is closely watching sales for Xenoblade Chronicles in Europe. He also stated that if the consumer reaction was positive in that territory then Nintendo would use that data in deciding what to do with the Wii's lost titles.

Happy 25th Anniversary to the Metroid Series!

Today marks the 25th Anniversary of the Metroid series! I have been thinking about what to do for the anniversary, but haven't quite decided yet. I have already written a review for Super Metroid, but nothing for the game that started it all. Perhaps a fitting tribute would be a review for the NES title.

Nintendo 3DS Sales Drop 50% After Price Drop Announcement

One week after Nintendo's price drop announcement sales numbers show that the Nintendo 3DS has dropped 50% from the week before. I think this is what we have been expecting. Gamers are clearly waiting for the price drop to happen. It is a bit disheartening that more gamers aren't jumping on the 20 free games, but I guess an extra $80 is the more attractive deal.

At least it's selling better than the PSP Go...

Monochrome Racing for Nintendo’s WiiWare™ service– Immerse yourself in the mysterious monochrome world!

August 04, 2011 - London, ENGLAND - Nordcurrent, a European game developer and publisher, announced today that its latest game for Nintendo’s WiiWare™ service is now available on the Wii™ Shop Channel in North America and Europe  for a price of 500 Wii Points™. Monochrome Racing is a unique racing game that takes place in a black and white world. And since the world is black and white, color becomes the scarce resource that players compete for.

Each car starts the race completely charged; it is bright and full of color. During the race, the color gradually vanishes away, and in order to recharge, a car needs to drive over the colored checkpoint, this will restore the color level, otherwise cars turn monochrome and will be knocked out.
“We are happy to introduce to you our racing game set in a monochrome world”, said Victoria Trofimova, Director at Nordcurrent. “We hope that our use of color as a part of gameplay mechanic will make the game more challenging and addictive.”

Madden 2012 to allow Roster Updates on the Wii

Due to the NFL lockout madness, EA Sports is unable to include the most up to date rosters. We will get rosters as they were before the free agency, but Wii owners will be able to download updates for the most current roster when the game is released.

Pure Nintendo contacted EA for this information, and it was stated specifically that the Wii will be able to do download updates. This is fantastic news for Madden fans that are online, but kind of crappy for those without an internet connection.

Future of Star Fox Series Depends on Star Fox 64 3D Reception

Fans have been clamoring for a new entry in the Star Fox series over the past few years, and it may happen depending on one factor. Mr. Iwata revealed that factor to be the reception of Star Fox 64 3D. If fans want a new Star Fox game, then make sure to support Star Fox 64 3D.

Regardless of the title being an old game, in my eyes it's the best in the series and its 3D overhaul is bound to look great, therefore supporting this title should be an easy decision for most gamers. So come September 9th, get out and support this amazing game.

Satoru Iwata Sends Apology Letter to Early Adopters of the Nintendo 3DS

As everyone is well aware of by now, Nintendo announced a dramatic price drop for their Nintendo 3DS handheld only a few months after its release. Concerned that early adopters would lose their trust in the company, Nintendo immediately began an Ambassador program to begin reconciliation. Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors would be gifted 20 free games for their loyalty.

Currently, only Japanese Nintendo 3DS owners are receiving this letter. Here is the letter in its entirety:

To Those Customers Who Bought A Nintendo 3DS Before The Price Change

Greetings, everyone. This is Satoru Iwata from Nintendo.
Thank you very much for purchasing a Nintendo 3DS.
We have just announced a price drop for the Nintendo 3DS system effective on August 11 [August 12 in North America].
In the past, there have been price drops for video game systems some time after their release in order to broaden the user base further. However, never before has Nintendo chosen to issue such a dramatic price drop less than 6 months after a system release.
We are all too keenly aware that those of you who supported us by purchasing the 3DS in the beginning may feel betrayed and criticize this decision.
This unprecedented timing for a price cut is because the situation has changed greatly since we originally launched the 3DS. We decided it was necessary to take this drastic step in order to ensure that large numbers of users will continue to enjoy the 3DS in the future.
If the software creators and those on the retail side are not confident that the Nintendo 3DS is a worthy successor to the DS and will achieve a similarly broad (user) base, it will be impossible for the 3DS to gain popularity, acquire a wide range of software, and eventually create the product cycle necessary for everyone to be satisfied with the system.
Those customers who purchased the 3DS at the very beginning are extremely important to us. We know that there is nothing we can do to completely make up for the feeling that you are being punished for buying the system early. Still, we would like to offer the following as a sign of our appreciation to you.
[3DS Ambassador program details]
We feel a strong responsibility to develop the 3DS as a platform -- to ensure that, in the end, everyone is satisfied; we will make every effort to do so.
Additionally, we know everyone is waiting for Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. They are scheduled for release in November and December, respectively, so we ask for your patience until then.
Thank you again, and we look forward to your continued support.

Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions Non-Deletable Save File is Actually Deletable

Similar to the controversy that surrounded Capcom's 3DS title, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, reports surfaced that Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions featured a non-deletable save file. To the delight of many gamers, Namco now reports that this is actually false information. Nacmo says that there was a miscommunication when deliver the information initially.

For those whom want to delete their save files in Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions, follow these instructions:

Press ABXYLR when you boot up the game to delete your save file
This well timed information will most likely help those on the fence with their decision to purchase the game.
