SEGA has announced plans to bring the Sonic & All-Stars Racing series to the Nintendo 3DS. The latest edition will be called Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. As you may have guessed the Transformed part is indeed important as vehicle transformations will play a big part in the high speed racing gameplay. At specific points in certain stages, characters karts may transform to adapt with the terrain, for example: Sonic is racing along in his kart until the land morphs (yes, the terrain can transform as well) into a bump and sends Sonic skyward, Sonic's kart must now transform into a plane to continue racing through the sky. Boats have also been confirmed for the game.
In addition to the new transforming gameplay elements, SEGA has implemented a new weapon system that will allow you to block, or evade incoming attacks. Sounds like some of the skill you'd come to expect from a racing title is being added back into the game. As always, the game's cast of characters and tracks will draw from the long line of SEGA franchises.
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is expected to launch sometime during the fall 2012 season.
NOTE: No WereSonic transformations have been spotted... yet.
