Kid Icarus: Uprising includes a unique take on difficulty settings. As you get hearts from enemies you can use them in something called "The Fiend's Cauldron" to increase the intensity, or difficulty if you will. The higher difficulty settings will give out the best rewards, as well as giving the player a a greater challenge. Nintendo's latest Kid Icarus: Trailer demonstrates what to expect when jumping from an easier intensity setting to a greater one, and it looks like things will get challenging.

Capcom Lowers Resident Evil: Revelations Price in North America!
As we know, Capcom was asking $49.99 for Resident Evil: Revelations in North America. I say "was" because they have officially announced that they have found a way to lower the price to $39.99; the standard pricing for Nintendo 3DS games. So those complaining about the $50 price point now have no reason to complain.
I thoroughly enjoyed the demo and can't wait to play this game come February 7th!
Thanks to SuperPhillip for the tip!

Nintendo Adding NFC Support to the Wii U Controller
Nintendo confirmed during its recent financial briefing that Near Field Communication (NFC) will be added to the Wii U controller. NFC is a set of standards used to establish a radio communication between devices in close proximity; this technology is being used now in smartphones.
Nintendo explains that NFC may be used in conjunction with cards and figurines to create a brand new gaming experience, or even as a way to make micropayments. It is definitely an interesting attribute to add to the Wii U controller, but I'd like to get more information on how it will be used to expand our gaming experience.

Wii U Coming Just In Time for Year End Sales Season
Nintendo not only confirmed the existence of a new Super Mario Bros. game, but they also confirmed that the Wii U will be released between E3 and the end of 2012; specifically right in time for the year end sales season. In fact, North America, Europe and Japan will get the new console this year. Nintendo will showcase the console it is final form at this year's E3 2012 event and went on to state that they are working hard to have sufficient sofware developed so that the console can be at its best during the launch period.

New 2D Super Mario Bros. Game Coming to the Nintendo 3DS
Satoru Iwata announced that a new 2D side-scrolling Super Mario Bros. game would be released for the Nintendo 3DS during the company's third quarter financial results briefing. While there isn't any other information available yet, we do know that the title will release within the next fiscal year.
I am excited because 2D was mentioned, not 2.5D with 3D models. I would love to play a new retro-styled Super Mario Bros. with the handheld's added 3D effect. Both Mutant Mudds and Mighty Switch Force use a 2D graphics style and the 3D looks amazing. Maybe Nintendo has plans to release a Super Mario Bros. 4? I guess only time will tell.

Capcom and the Great Resident Evil: Revelations Derp
Twitter user @bitmobshoe reports that there is a typo on the spine of the new Resident Evil: Revelations case. It's a pretty funny typo and a harmless one at that, but in all seriousness this could potentially have some collector value now. Capcom will likely offer a solution to North Americans if many of these show up in the initial production run.

Play Nintendo's Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games Demo Impressions
Last week I gave my impressions of the Resident Evil: Revelations Demo, and this week I am prepared to do the same for the Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games Demo. Both games are on completely different ends of the spectrum, so this article will be a little different. First, I want to give my impressions on some general stuff.
I will admit that I was a little shocked to see how good this game looked on the 3DS. There aren't as many polygons as its console counterparts, but it sure looks good nonetheless. The overall presentation is pretty cool and sticks with the theme London chose for its 2012 Olympic Games. While I'm on the subject, I have mixed reactions about the 3D effect itself. In some games the 3D is barely noticeable (25m Rapid Fire Pistol), in others it's a little distracting (Football), and sometimes it looks pretty cool. Enough of the presentation, let's get to the gameplay.
I am 100% new to the Mario and Sonic series, so forgive me for my ignorance. Gameplay wise, I was surprised. Every game controlled quite well and used a variety of different styles from just one button, to stylus control and even a little gyro functionality. You get to try out five of the different Olympic games on the demo including: 25m Rapid Fire Pistol, Football, Trampoline, 100m backstroke, and BMX.

How to Unlock Characters in Mario Kart 7
Mario Kart 7 has been out for little over a month now, so why post this now? Well, because I just finished unlocking all characters that the game has to offer. In my opinion, this Mario Kart game has one of the most interesting and varied cast of characters to date. Of course we all have our favourite from the standard roster, but there is always another new character that tickles our fancy. Get 3D Classics: Kid Icarus when you Pre-Order Kid Icarus: Uprising

The press release says United States, but I would imagine that Canada will get it as well. There was no retail outlet listed as having this download as an exclusive either, more details will probably come soon.

Play Nintendo's Resident Evil: Revelations Demo Impressions
After downloading this 1149 block demo I can officially get excited for Resident Evil: Revelations. From beginning to end I was impressed around every corner. Nintendo finally gives us 3DS demos and I'd say it's an instant success; Capcom you will definitely get my money for this game. Keep in mind that these impressions will only cover the Normal difficulty mode, however if you follow me on Twitter (@PlayNintendoCA) then you can stay up to date with my impressions of Hell mode.
Resident Evil: Revelations Demo begins with an immediate blast of horror greatness. I absolutely love the classically creepy sounding theme (somewhat a tradition for the series) that plays during the menu selections. You can start your game right away, but I always seem to wander into options first. I got to know the controls and found some other interesting options. You can change the color of your reticle (Green, Blue, Red, and White) and the 3D strength of the game. I went with strong because I thought very strong was a bit too much.
So, the demo begins with Jill waking to find herself inside of a room on the ship and she seems to be a little confused. She says it looks like a familiar mansion, and I agree, the surroundings are all very reminiscent of Resident Evil 1 from the wallpaper to the atmosphere. You need to find your way out of the first room which isn't too hard. Walking around is easily done with the slide pad while interacting with objects is done with Y. However, I took my time to check out the graphics at this point and will say that this is definitely the most gorgeous looking game on the 3DS. Maybe its because you visit small portions of the game at a time, but I feel that works in favor of the genre. After leaving the room you will be in a series of tight hallways and solve a few more small puzzles, but of course, you will soon have a visitor.
Encountering the first enemy was a bit frightening, mainly because I didn't know the controls yet. I soon learned to shoot while holding R and pressing Y while strafing can be done while holding L and using the slide pad, this is very useful for backing away from the enemy. Shooting is handled in a first person view and is pretty decent. Aiming will take a little practice, but in its current state it isn't unplayable; reloading is easily done by holding R and pressins B. If you do get in a bind you can use X to deploy your sub weapon which is a knife at first, but later you will find grenades. Herbs are plentiful in the demo, and you can heal by simply pressing A. Keep in mind that I don't have the additional slide pad and I think that these controls work just fine.
There are some nice touches in the game like fog effects and blood spattering on the screen when you're low on health. These look very cool in 3D, as do the subtitles. 3D definitely brings out a lot of depth in the game, but I couldn't see you wanting to have it any higher than half as it gets a little blurry. One place where I thought the 3D worked well was during the scanning sections. You will receive a scanner early on that allows you to inspect the environment for hidden items. I can tell already that this will come in handy as the game progresses and I personally love this new addition. In fact, it kind of reminds me of Metroid Prime as there is a completion percentage that accompanies the scanner.
Overall, the Resident Evil: Revelations demo shows how the game will stay true to its horror origins with incredible atmospheric music and overall setting with a few horrific frights; I left extremely impressed. Hopefully the rest of the game is very similar to the demo and if it is, then this will be some killer software for the 3DS. I will be buying the game and hopefully provide a more in-depth review including impressions on the slide pad, although I feel the game can be played just fine as it is now.

Don't wanna pay 50 Bucks for Resident Evil: Revelations? Well, Don't...
Amazon.ca has Resident Evil: Revelations available for pre-order for $39.99! Plus, according to their usual promotion you are guaranteed to get this price (or lower) if you pre-order a game before it changes. As we all know, Capcom has decided to sell it for $49.99 and while many support this decision, there are many that don't. It also doesn't look like you will be getting any bonus items like you would at Gamestop, but why not take advantage of a deal when one comes up?
If you were thinking about buying the game (or at least waiting for the demo first) then I'd recommend getting over there before the price changes. Yes, it's only 10 bucks, but that's 10 bucks for another 3DS game.

Kid Icarus: Uprising to be Bundled with a 3DS Stand **Update**

That I'm not really sure of at the moment, but it will definitely make watching Netflix, Nintendo Video, etc. much more bearable.
**Update**
It has been confirmed by Nintendo of America that the stand will be included as a free bonus in all copies of Kid Icarus: Uprising sold in North America. This statement was made to Shacknews and also continued to explain that the stand could be used on any flat surface to provide a comfortable option for playing the game.

It looks like Nintendo will change the games right after January 31, so expect a new update around that time.

Play Nintendo's Top 12 Most Anticipated Nintendo Games of 2012
OK, before I get on to the list, I'd like to clarify something. This list will include mostly only titles that we know are coming in 2012. Sure there are a few outliers here and there, but for the most part you will be playing these titles in the first half of 2012. With that said, let's get on to the list, which is in no particular order this time.
12. Dillon’s Rolling Western
A new Nintendo IP surfaces and it’s a unique one. Dillon’s Rolling Western is one of the first of its kind (At least I think so); It can be best described as a tower defense game with real time combat similar to that of an action adventure. Dillon is responsible for defending a number of towns and must collect resources during the day and fight hordes of monsters at night. The quality that can be seen in this one is indicative of the direction Nintendo wants to take its Nintendo eShop.
11. Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword
Another new IP to make the list that also happens to be an eShop game. Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword is an odd looking game based on Japanese lore, and I think it’s getting too much shit online. I watched the trailer on YouTube and in the comments section gamers were bitchin about how crappy this game looks. Well, I must be watching a different trailer or something because not only do I think this game has what looks like an intriguing and FUN battle system, a stylized graphical approach much like that of Okami, and it also includes town wandering that certain other Action Adventure games (Skyward Sword) get lots of praise for including. I am personally looking forward to this game and it was on this list before I ran into the large amount of negativity, so I did see something in this game that got me excited.

Nintendo 3DS Sells over 4 Million Units! Beats Wii Sales in its First Nine Months
Nintendo has released sales figures with regards to the Nintendo 3DS and things are indeed looking up. In its first Nine months, Nintendo has sold over 4 Million units of the Nintendo 3DS hardware, which also happens to be more than the Wii sold in the same amount of time. No doubt, one of the main factors for this success has to be attributed to the dramatic price drop seen in August of last year. Props should also be given to Nintendo's main man Mario as not one, but two Mario games saw release in late 2011.
Both Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 have crossed the million mark making them the first two titles to sell a million copies each! Not only are they the first two to hit a million copies sold, but they are also the fastest selling games in their respective series.
Check out the press release below for more information regarding Nintendo's momentum heading into 2012.

Play Nintendo Celebrates its First Year On the Internet
One year ago today marks the day I decided to purchase playnintendo.ca, even if I haven't done much with the domain name, I can at least say we're not some flash in the pan. I am dedicated to continue Play Nintendo and look to survive another year!
Play Nintendo has seen various changes throughout the year, and overcome many challenges. We have switched from a squished Nintendo aggregate to a more focused approach with news delivery. No more junk posts for the sake of having something to post, if it doesn't up the quality of this blog, then it doesn't make the cut. I've also changed the layout many times, and have now settled down with the current design for the foreseeable future.
As for challenges, sometimes, I felt like giving up and saying eff this blog thing, but there have been a few people that participated in the comments section that made the journey worthwhile. You guys know who you are! Without you, there is no Play Nintendo.
Other then the determination to keep going, there is also the issue of not owning a 3DS for all of 2011. Since we're not qualified enough to receive press goodies, we couldn't get our hands on a 3DS early like many other websites. In my opinion this hurt our growth a lot, but I had to persevere and continue providing retro reviews, Top 10 lists, and of course Wii and DS Reviews. Which was only possible due to a working relationship with Nintendo of Canada through their lender program which is handled by PR group, Cohn & Wolfe. Without them, there would be absolutely no new reviews, since I'm not currently working and consider this my full time job. In the end, no money equals no new games to review.
So, after 2850 posts, 67,150 pageviews, and 365 days, Play Nintendo is here for another year. Let's make this one even stronger!
Thank you to everyone!!

Play Nintendo Presents Best of 2011 Awards
2011 was a weird year for Nintendo gamers. In the beginning there was almost nothing to play, a game here and there plus scraps leftover from the previous year. Sure, the Nintendo 3DS was released and there were a few good games to play, even some great games, but no killer software that would be a must buy. That would all change around June, when some great games started to reveal themselves. Now, I will take a look back at the previous year and select the best games in six categories. Oh yeah, and the Play Nintendo reader picks will be here as well!
Best Nintendo DS Game of 2011
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year fellow Canadian and American friends! Today marks another year long journey in our lives and possibly the last year; you know, if those fancy Mayan apocalypse predictions were actually true. Regardless, it's time to celebrate and be merry and forget about the pending Zombie outbreak. (Luckily, most of us have been trained well with a certain Resident Evil series)
I've managed to pump out some original content each day, but not at the pace I wanted to be releasing stuff. I still have to complete my Super Mario 3D Land review, my best of 2011 awards and I'm also working on a Top 12 games to play in 2012 article. I'm a little under the weather, so these will be coming a little slower than planned. Tomorrow, I will complete the best of 2011 awards with the Super Mario 3D Land review hopefully coming the following day. The Top 12 list should also come sometime this week and preferably before Thursday! (Just in case a certain eShop game is released)
Another big event will occur this week and is actually just around the corner... January 2nd I'm looking at you!
