Nintendo Rejects The Binding of Isaac for Nintendo 3DS Release

Maybe I'm too much like Zelda? OK, so I'm a shooter and Zelda isn't

Unfortunately, we have learned this morning that The Binding of Isaac (developed by Super Meat Boy's Edmund McMillen) will NOT be coming to the Nintendo 3DS. Apparently the reasoning for this has to do with Nintendo not being comfortable with the "questionable" religious content of the game, therefore they don't want to have it on Nintendo consoles.

It's a little disappointing to see that Nintendo has opted to let this little gem gather Steam ($4.99) instead of a place on the Nintendo eShop.

Retro Game Master DVD coming to North America!

Play Nintendo readers that were around last Summer know that I'm a huge fan of the Retro Game Master (Game Center CX) television show and video game (Retro Game Challenge). Well, you can imagine my delight to find out that Discotek Media will be releasing a DVD that compiles the 12 episodes that aired on Kotaku last year. There will be two audio tracks available including the translated versions and the original Japanese tracks (with subtitles of course).

The Kotaku episodes were both a success and disappointment in my mind. A whole new audience were introduced to Arino with an English translation of the video game sections of the TV show. However, quite a bit of the show was cut due to licensing issues, which is fine and all, but those missing sections made the Kotaku versions feel incomplete. It's still good to see the project getting a release on DVD!

Mario Party 9 Story and Bosses Trailer

Direct Link

This trailer comes from Nintendo of America and showcases the story mode and bosses found within the game. Looks like Bowser is up to no good, as per usual. I'm unsure about the boss battles at the moment, but I'm looking forward to them regardless.

Mario Party 9 Launch Trailer

Direct Link

This is the European launch trailer, but it still gives us a great idea of what the game will be like when it launches in North America two weeks from now. Boss battles are definitely a cool addition, boards are looking top notch, it looks like there are new strategies to be formed with the vehicle. Definitely one worth trying.

Pokemon Black Version 2 and Pokemon White Version 2 Teaser Trailer

New mysteries await us, eh? Well, there's not much else in this trailer other then a confirmation that these games will be coming this fall. Are you Pokemon fans excited? Sound off in the comments!

First Hour of PokePark 2: Wonders Beyond

Here is the first hour of PokePark 2: Wonders Beyond. I split this into two parts to make sure I could get it uploaded as fast as possible. The gameplay is a little... boring. In fact, I must have bored someone from my subscriptions so bad that I got a dislike on the second part's first view, Achievement unlocked! That's got to be an achievement, no?

Mario Party 9 North America TV Commercial

This is a charming little commercial and one that gets me excited for some more Mario Party action! I know the series has taken a little dip in recent entries (though there is definitely fun to be had), but I'm hoping Mario Party 9 will break that trend. I'm a little disappointed that there is no online, but this commercial really brings back the great memories of playing in the presence of others.

Pokemon News: PokePark 2: Wonders Beyond Hits Retailers Today!

PokePark 2: Wonders Beyond is released to retailers today! So, if you enjoyed the first game, or you want some Pokemon action to hold you over until Pokemon Black 2/Pokemon White 2, this may be for you. I recommend everyone check out my review before making a decision on this one.

Sick of Pokemon yet? Well, there's still a little more coverage coming from me including the first hour of PokePark 2: Wonders Beyond and the review, so stay tuned!

Pokemon News: Pokemon Black Version 2 and Pokemon White Version 2 Coming to North America this Fall!

Sick of seeing these guys yet? Only days after Nintendo's huge announcement of Pokemon Black Version 2 and Pokemon White Version 2, we now have a confirmation for a North America release this fall. A release date is still up in the air at the moment, but we now know it will come later this year!

Future of Play Nintendo Statement

Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere! I plan to blog about video games for as long as possible! I also plan to improve Play Nintendo on a consistent basis. I am at the stage now where I am looking to go beyond Blogger and use my playnintendo.ca domain. I've dropped my magazine idea to get the ball rolling on Play Nintendo and to get the PlayNintendo.ca domain up for E3 2012, which may be a lofty goal, depending on how this goes.

With that said, I wanted to let you all know that I will be trying a new ad network to publish a few ads on the blog. I'm thinking a maximum of two ads with a minimum of one; I want to keep the blog as clutter free as possible to keep the best possible experience. (Editor's Note: I did end up deciding on a four ad trial, I apologize for inconvenience)

This new opportunity I'm exploring will help me propel Play Nintendo forward. I'm not asking anything of my faithful readers, other then some feedback! If these ads devalue your Play Nintendo experience, let me know how I can improve it for you in the comments. This has become somewhat of a full time job for me and I really want to make that next step.

I just wanted to give you a heads up of what to expect in the next couple of days as to not piss you all off; you people are amazing and I thank you for coming back to Play Nintendo! Ads are somewhat of a touchy subject for me. I've tried them in the past and they looked absolutely awful on Play Nintendo, however, I believe I have found a service that will offer the best possible solution. Ads have become somewhat necessary to survive hosting costs and I'm looking to get a head start.

Sorry for the wordy post, but I just wanted to be up front with you and not surprise you with ads the next time you check out a review or two.

Thank you for your patronage!

Mario Tennis Open Box Art

I'm really digging this box art and feel that Nintendo is on a roll with great art work in general. I've always been a fan of box art, so anytime an aesthetically eye pleasing piece comes up, I immediately take notice.

For examples of recent, yet fantastic box art see: Rhythm Heaven Fever, Mario Party 9, Kid Icarus Uprising and Xenoblade Chronicles.

Pokemon News: Pokemon.com Confirms Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 for North America

After last night's shocking reveal of Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2, Nintendo of America confirmed that the games will be coming to North America with a listing on Pokemon.com. A release date isn't mentioned, but it does say that one will be coming soon. Look for more information on these games in the coming weeks.

Pokemon News: Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 Announced

I usually don't post international Nintendo news, but this one was too interesting to pass. Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 have been announced for the Nintendo DS, yes, you read that right. The games will release in Japan this coming June and will have special features exclusive to the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo 3DS.

This is a new twist on the way we have received Pokemon games in the past; instead of the inevitable Grey (third) version, or at least most of us thought it was inevitable, Nintendo will release new versions of both Pokemon Black and Pokemon White. Both Pokemon pictured above are new forms of Kyurem with their names being announced at a later date.

No release date has been set for North America, but I'm sure we will hear more in the near future.

Pre-Order Xenoblade Chronicles and get an Exclusive Art Book

Nintendo of America announced on their Twitter feed that gamers pre-ordering a copy of Xenoblade Chronicles at Gamestop would get an exclusive art book as a bonus item. The tweet also says that the art book is for US only, so it is unknown Canadians will also get the bonus item.

I think it's worth noting that Xenoblade Chronicles is currently the best selling Wii video game in Canada at EB Games/Gamestop.

It's a SECRET to everybody: Super Castlevania IV - Fully Equipped Before Dracula

This is a secret that I remember from when I used to watch my older cousins play Super Castlevania IV. The game can be quite tough on you at times, so it's nice to know that Konami is willing to help you along the journey. If you're having a little trouble fighting Dracula, you can actually get fully equipped right before entering the final boss chamber by finding this secret item drop.

All you have to do is jump to the left, you will land on one invisible platform, jump left again to find the item drop; make sure you go all the way to the left to trigger the madness. You will receive 99 hearts, two whip upgrades, a cross boomerang, and a II & III icon (allows you to toss three sub-weapons), and if you're hurting a health power-up will drop. After getting this secret item drop, you will have the most optimal setup for defeating Dracula.

Here is a trailer of the WiiWare version to give you an idea of what to expect in this arcade like game:

Greatest Levels of Gaming: Super Mario Bros. World 1-1

World 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. is probably the most important and definitely the most iconic level in gaming; for many gamers it is also the first level they ever explored. World 1-1 offers up some easy platforming to help you learn the gameplay, but it also yields some nostalgic secrets that every gamer should know. Who could forget discovering the 1-UP Mushroom before the very first pit? What about discovering that pipes can be entered by pressing down?

World 1-1 also gives gamers plenty of opportunities to break bricks, collect coins, discover power-ups and encounter the first ever flagpole in the Super Mario series. Goombas and Koopa Troopas also patrol the level, so you will have to defeat, or avoid them when they attack, if you could call it that. Overall, World 1-1 is extremely easy to complete, but its design and influence make this one a classic.

Watch me play World 1-1!

Want me to demo a certain level? E-mail me at parko(at)playnintendo(dot)ca with the subject line Levels, and if I own the game or have access to it, I will consider doing that level.

Play Nintendo Blog Update

Hey there everyone!

I just wanted to drop in and fill you in on some of the plans I have changed. I recently decided to do a magazine, but after some thought, I think it is best if I focus all my time on the blog instead. The magazine was coming along OK, even if a bit slowly, but I think it's best to focus on the Play Nintendo blog. I have received incredible support from affiliates and readers, so I would like to dedicate my time to making this the best possible Play Nintendo.

There are a few new ideas that I was going to put in the magazine, however, now I will be bringing them to the blog! Here is a short description of what will be coming here soon:
  1. I will be doing a monthly feature called Gamer Profile that will highlight gamers that read this blog and those I discover around the Internet. Could be through Let's Play channels on YouTube, Twitter, in the comments, or even through suggestion.
  2. Another new feature would be called: Greatest Levels of Gaming. Greatest Levels of Gaming will be a weekly/bi-weekly feature where I will pick a level that I've played through at some point, write a little feature for it and record a video of me playing through the level. GameTrailers does something similar called Level, which is good, but I hope to bring a different approach to the idea. I will also ask for suggestions on this as well.
  3. I will also do another feature called: Secret. Secret will showcase cheats, hidden levels, easter eggs, or whatever one could consider a Secret in a video game.
I will start off by introducing Greatest Levels of Gaming later today.

All of these new features will be in addition to Showdown, I've got Video Game Music Stuck in my Head, Play Nintendo Retro, and reviews for current Nintendo games, and of course the best Nintendo news that I can find!

That is all for now, Paratroopa has a message for you before you leave:

Play Nintendo's Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D Photo Camo Set

A review for Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D will be coming later in the week, but for now I'd like to share with you the Photo Camouflage that I've created. Granted, those who have played the game know that you can't actually share the created Camo, but you can share the pictures used to create the Camo. Any picture you take with your 3DS can automatically be used for the Photo Camo feature in Snake Eater 3D.

Here are the 12 "Photo Camo" creations I use taken from floors, walls, and even furniture that I've come in contact with. All you have to do is copy/save them to your SD card (make sure you save them in the DCIM folder) and choose them when using the Photo Camo feature in Snake Eater 3D. To be honest, I find myself switching between these more often than the ones you get in the game.

Dillon's Rolling Western Trailer + Gameplay Tips

Direct Link

This one looks interesting; I like how it combines tower defense with action adventure, but the price is a little steep at $9.99. There may be lots of content here, but it's hard to say without playing first.

Nintendo also uploaded a gameplay tips video which you can find after the break:

New 3D Classics: Kid Icarus Trailer

Not much to say about this one, but I will admit that not all the backgrounds are bad. Some of them are still very cheesy and look out of place, but that's just my opinion.

I'm very excited for Mario Tennis Open!! I'm a sucker for Mario Tennis games, especially Mario Tennis for the N64. Camelot developed that game and is developing Mario Tennis Open, so I have nothing but excitement for this one.

Just checked out the eShop to see if this game would now be available for purchase, but it looks like Nintendo has removed the game. There are no indications that this removal will be for good, nor is there any indication that the game will come back and be available purchase. I'll keep an eye out on the eShop and press releases to see if Nintendo will re-release this game for those that missed the opportunity to grab it for free.

Wii News: Hulu Plus Not Available in Canada

Sorry to disappoint you fellow Canadians, but Hulu Plus is only available in the United States. I just checked the Wii Shop Channel to download the software and try out the 2 week trial, but it is not available here in Canada. You heard it here first!

I just mentioned this morning that Netflix sucks in Canada and that Hulu Plus would be a great alternative, well, it's not looking that way anymore. All is good for those in the United States though as I have seen multiple Twitter users confirm the download being available. I'll keep you posted if anything else comes up.

Play Nintendo's Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D Demo Impressions

This is one of the big Nintendo 3DS games that I've been looking forward to playing, so you can imagine my excitement after learning that the demo be available today! It took roughly 8 minutes to download and I spent around 40 minutes playing (and completing) the demo. Now I'd like to share my initial impressions.

First off, there are no long cut-scenes in this demo, so the 40 minutes I spent on the demo was mostly gameplay. There are a few short conversations including a small tutorial for using the camouflage feature, but more on that in a bit.

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D looks extremely good on the Nintendo 3DS. I spent equal amounts of time with the 3D on and off, but which do I prefer? For whatever reason, the game seemed to look a little better in 3D, not to mention the incredible depth of the massive jungle setting. I was able to shoot a guard from a very far distance, something I don't think I could have done with the 3D setting off. Plus the setting itself really lends itself well to 3D; crawling looks pretty cool in 3D, it's so good it's almost lifelike and really immersed me in the experience.

Wii News: Hulu Plus finally available on the Wii! Download Today

Hulu Plus coming to the Wii isn't exactly news to Nintendo fans, but starting today, Nintendo fans can finally download Hulu Plus to their Wii console.

It will cost $7.99 a month to access the service and then you will be able to stream current episodes of TV Shows such as; Family Guy, Glee, Vampire Diaries and The Office just to name a few. There will also be an archive of past popular TV shows like Grey's Anatomy. There are also hundreds of movies from studios like Miramax available as well.

Not sure if you want to become a Hulu Plus subscriber? Well, if you download Hulu Plus to your Wii within one month of launch, you will receive a free two week trial subscription to the service. From what I gather you will only be eligible if you don't already use the service.

I tried Netflix when it was available and while the streaming was fine, the content was an issue in Canada. We didn't get to access most of the content that was available in the United States and that truly sucked. Sounds like Hulu Plus may be a better option for Canadians. I plan to download the service today and will review it after getting some hands on time.

3DS News: Good News 3DS Ambassadors! Super Mario Bros. can now be Updated!

Hey Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors! For those of you that have been playing Super Mario Bros. on your 3DS you will be delighted to hear that an update for the game is now available. Looks like Nintendo is starting to roll out some of those additional features it promised for NES/GBA games,

As of right now the only additional feature available through the update is the ability to create a save state, much like the save states you can create with Game Boy titles. There are also some neat changes made to the game's icon on the home menu, but I'll keep those as a surprise.

You will need to update the game through the settings menu in the eShop. There you can select the game in the downloads section and update the game whenever you're ready.

3DS News: Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D Demo Confirmed for North America

Konami has finally confirmed that the Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D Demo is coming to North America on Thursday, February 16th. Nintendo fans can expect to play through an early part of the game which takes place in a Soviet jungle. You will also be able to experiment with the camouflage functionality in the demo. Sounds like this a must play demo if you ask me.

I'm still here! + a Play Nintendo magazine?!>!?

I haven't made any posts for a little over a day as there really hasn't been much to talk about news wise. There are some rumors floating around, but nothing concrete to report. I am working on a review to make up for the downtime and that should be up very soon!

I have also been toying around with an idea for a Play Nintendo online magazine, which is why I've been mostly absent. I'm not sure if that's something you guys would be interested in seeing or not. I totally stole (was inspired by) the idea from DigitallyDownloaded.net. It would be comprised of articles and features exclusive to the online magazine, as well as exclusive reviews with some reviews coming from the Play Nintendo archive as well. To show that I'm actually serious about this, here is an image of the magazine cover I designed with my limited skills

This doesn't mean it will begin in February, or at all, but I am very intrigued by the idea. The magazine would be free to read and would be all about Nintendo, but I would be looking to sell ad space inside the mag to try and raise cash for a Wii U purchase and Play Nintendo in general. There would be monthly issues as well as the potential special edition. Is this something you'd like to see? Leave some comments to let me know as I would love to try at least one issue.

Play It Parko! Rhythm Heaven Fever (Wii) Rhythm Test

Play It Parko! will be a series of videos that showcase me playing video games. This will often be games that I am reviewing, but I'll also upload videos of me playing games for fun from time to time. I feel an urge to play Super Mario Bros. 3 again, so keep an eye out for that. However, over the next few days I will be uploading Rhythm Heaven Fever videos!

At the moment these videos will be extremely bare bones; that means no commentary, no fancy effects, etc. I'm new to video editing, so it will take me some time to learn the ropes. I really want to add a kick ass animation/opening sequence, but that's a ways off. For now, I hope you can enjoy watching me fail to comprehend the concept of rhythm.

Super Mario Crossover 2.0 Released!!

It seems like it was only yesterday (OK, a few weeks) when I announced that this game would be coming out sometime soon; well, that sometime soon is now here! Super Mario Crossover 2.0 is now online and ready to be played. This game features everything you love about Super Mario Bros and a ton of additional content.

You can pick skins representing the NES, SNES, Game Boy, or tell the game to mix up the skins for an unpredictable and fun experience. Each skin emulates the style of one of the games represented in this brilliant game.

There are 2 additional characters: Bass and Luigi. Characters also have alternate costumes which can be selected by pressing X. Plus, all of the original cast from Super Mario Crossover make their return!

You will need flash and some Mario skills to play this game.

Wii U News: Two Tribes Planning to Bring Toki Tori 2 to the Wii U

Two Tribes have just announced their plans to bring Toki Tori 2 to the Wii U console in their latest blog update. The Two Tribes team are big Nintendo fans that showcased their support for the debut of the WiiWare service back in 2008 with the original Toki Tori.

Two Tribes goes on to explain potential uses for the Wii U controller (other than a traditional control scheme) such as:
  • Playing Toki Tori 2 on the Wii U controller without your TV
  • A potential level editor that could run across your TV and the Wii U controller; this would allow you to view the level on the TV and make real time changes with the touchscreen on the Wii U controller
  • Of course storing and sharing levels depends on how Nintendo will handle the online infrastructure for the Wii U
  • No motion controls being considered
I like the idea of crafting the game to use the Wii U controller, especially being able to create levels using the touchscreen. Pushmo is a prime example of using a touchscreen for level creation.

All in all, Toki Tori 2 is beginning to look like a great project (I've been playing around with the beta on Steam), so I really hope their Wii U plans come to fruition.

Play Nintendo's Pushmo Creations! Come and get these QR Codes! Bumped up again!

So, I've been fooling around in Pushmo and have actually completed a puzzle I thought would be worthy of posting! This post will be full of my Pushmo creations, so come and get the QR codes and give my puzzles a try. If you enjoy scanning Pushmo QR codes, may I suggest that you bookmark this blog post? I will try to provide new Pushmo creations on a fairly regular basis. It is an awesome way to increase your mileage with this game!
